February 2020 Baker Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture Minutes
February 6, 2020, Red River Inn
Members present: Jade Boggs, Alissa Miller, Karol Zachmann, Tammy O’Donnell, Trish Barth, Mona Madler, Dean Wang, Merri Beck, Nick Schumacher, Steve Zachmann, Christina Gaub, JoDee Pratt, Emily Medearis, Angie Rabbitt
President Jade Boggs called the meeting to order.
Nick moved to approve the Jan. minutes. Dean seconded. All in favor
OLD BUSINESS:
Discussed ideas for the Calcutta including having a large grand prize giveaway. Everyone agrees we should get Kyle Shobe’s band again this year. Will need to get dates set up so we can book them.
NEW BUSINESS:
2020 Membership: Forms have been e-mailed and mailed if need be. Membership forms are coming in. Karol will call those who haven’t returned them in the next couple of weeks.
Budget committee consisting of Trish Barth, Alissa Miller, Tammy O’Donnell met prior to the meeting and worked on the budget.
JoDee Pratt volunteered to be on the Chamber board.
REPORTS:
Nick Schumacher, Plevna Public Schools: Enrollment is up from fall. They are working with a computer company to revamp technology hardware and software. Volleyball has met with a favorable response from the community. The board will vote on it to start in the spring for grades 6-12. They are upgrading their lighting. FCCLA received a MidRivers grant to purchase a commercial embroidery machine. In January they received $6000 for professional development in school safety.
Steve Zachmann, City of Baker: They are now in a 15 day comment period (written) for SID. The hearing will be Feb. 18 and City Council meeting on the 19th. They are looking to add a bigger excavator to dig out water lines. The county has agreed to a $310,000 contribution for little east (between Hwy 7 & the lake) to remove old materials on the streets. A water leak at Longfellow School was dug up and repaired. They releveled the road by the post office and some other areas. The police dept. is hiring another officer. They gave approval for the county to extend the water line to the gun range. TransCanada is gearing up for the man camp. They have contracted for 162 million gallons of water (60,000 gallons per day). The Americanism Program was well attended. 97 music students took part and around 125-130 people attended.
JoDee Pratt, Mayor of City of Baker: Announced Darlene Hornung is Citizen of the Year. Steve Zachmann is president of Council. She said that the Rec Dept is needing referees for the Baker Jam youth basketball tournament.
Karol Zachmann, EMEDC: Eastern Plains Economic Development Corp. and EMEDC got a grant for $23,978 to complete a Fallon County childcare preliminary architectural report.
Karol Zachmann, Fallon Medical Complex: Health Fair will be April 29. There will be an open house Feb. 29 for Women’s Heart Health Month.
Angie Rabbitt, Baker Rec. Dept.: Baker Jam will be April 4 & 5. Referees are needed. She thanked the businesses who donated towards t-shirts. Fallon County youth will get free t shirts and discounted for all for $5.00. The spring newsletter will be in the paper Feb. 21.
Trish Barth, Lakeview Country Club: The are looking for a new manager. Tournament dates are set for the summer. They have a couple of Saturdays in June open.
